Motorcycle Mid Layers

In winter you should be wearing a mid-layer over your technical base-layer. A mid-layer come in all shapes and sizes. A fleece is a mid-layer. As is a jacket containing hollow-form fibres. Heavier Merino makes for a brilliant mid-layer. And then there’s our favourite, a down jacket. A down jacket is a great insulator, but a down jacket makes any motorcycle jacket more comfortable. And it works just as well off the bike as on it.

Icebreaker mens merino 260 Tech long sleeve half zip base layer in black

Martin Kernahan: Does what it says on the tin

Does what it says on the tin. Actually thats probably not true as I suspect this garment would be useless as an actual icebreaker. However as a base layer to keep me warm it does exactly that. I did wonder why it costs theee times as much as a merino base layer from my local high street outdoor outfitters but it turns out that you do need to inconvenience some actual merino sheep. Excellent.

Rukka Lahti mid-layer jacket in black

Brian: Mid-warmth mid layer - just like it says!

I have also got a Klim Maverick which is, as Motolegends point out in their review, definitely more toasty on cold days out. An excellent mid-layer. But tbh its often too warm to wear off the bike or socially in, say, a crowded bar. The Lahti is fine for more moderate rides on chilly days but comes into its own for off-bike and social wearing. Lucky me to have both!

Great top for on and off the bike plus the usual excellent Motolegends service
