Rukka Lahti mid-layer jacket in black Product Information
The Lahti is a new-for-2024, mid-layer from Rukka.
The Lahti may look like a down jacket, but it isn't quite that. The main body of the jacket is made up of a series of baffles, but those baffles don't contain genuine down; they contain a synthetic insulation made from a recycled fibres known as Repreve. This material has a resilient loft, it wicks moisture effectively, and it continues to work when wet. As an insulator, this filling basically does the same job as something like Thinsulate or Primaloft.
On the Lahti, the insulation is on the front and back of the jacket. There's nothing in the sleeves. And Rukka has done this on purpose, of course, partly because the main priority when it comes to staying warm on the bike is to protect the 'core'; but also because, by not have any insulation in the sleeves, the Lahti is going to be easier to wear under a motorcycle jacket.
The sleeves of the Lahti are constructed from a soft, stretch material. The jacket has a stand-up collar. There's a full-length zip up the front of the jacket. You also get two, zip-fastened, hand-warmer pockets.
So how warm is the Lahti? Well, that's a difficult question to answer. A layer like the Klim Maverick or the Rukka Down-X 2.0, filled to the brim with genuine duck or goose down will be warmer. But both of these are bulkier than the Lahti, and they are much more expensive too.
So, as ever, there's no right answer; and no wrong answer. A proper down jacket with a high 'fill power' rating makes for an incredibly warm mid layer. But such jackets, even though they will squeeze down, come naturally with a degree of bulk. The Lahti will not be as insulating as such a jacket. It will, though, trap body heat, importantly it will wick sweat better than genuine down, it will fit more easily under a motorcycle jacket, and it will cost you a lot less.
We like the Lahti. It is what it is. It's maybe not for the commuter who gets on the bike at 5.00 am on a winter's morning to commute into work, but for most of us it will do enough; and it will still be wearable in temperatures when a down jacket is liable to become too hot and clammy.
This is a jacket you could ride to work in, but then still continue to wear when you get to your desk. And you probably wouldn't want to do that in a full-on down jacket.

Sam: Typical Rukka quality
A really good mid-layer jacket, particularly under a leather jacket, which tends to have slimmer sleeves than textile jackets. And, being quite short, it doesnt ruck up too much when the jacket is zipped to the trousers. This jacket is much too nice to restrict to motorcycle use it is also perfect as an everyday casual jacket.
Iain Alexander: Fantastic Rukka mid layer
I bought this mid layer for my Father in law who has previously always worn a fleece jumper underneath. He absolutely loves the new Rukka mid layer, a nice snug fit and light, he even wore it in the evening to go out in on a recent trip, excellent value for money.
Richard Allway: Great fit
Great mid layer as its warm, comfortable and because of the length, perfectly designed for a shorter fit meaning it doesnt bunch up. Love it
Mark McDonald: Brilliant
I bought this to replace a worn out North Face fleece which I used to wear under my Rukka jacket on cooler mornings then later in the day as it gets warmer remove it store it in my tank bag. It is perfect for this packs up pretty small, not bulky under my jacket tidy enough to wear out for dinner or a few pints. The sizing is spot on as per other Rukka jackets.
Phil: Great mid layer
Got this just before my first ride of the year, it was 6 degrees aod with this jacket under my nivala I was just right, its better than the down as that for me is too bulky, and this jacket also looks good on its own.
Albi Herbert: Great jacket by rukka
Only bought this a month ago but its been my go to mid layer jacket on and off the bike ,. Its even a good enough quality to wear out to the pub , all in all a cracking buy in my opinion
Kevin: Nice mid layer
Warm, comfortable, non-bulky, easy to wear under jacket and around indoorsoffice. Only recently purchased in January, its February, not sure when itll become too warm to have on but it wont take much space in a bag. Have worn it comfortably under the down jacket layer when super cold which was nice and toasty without feeling bulky.
Paul: Brilliant piece of kit
I have worn this under my winter textile jacket with the thermal liner removed and it worked brilliantly. When at work used it as an extra layer all day before the 10 mile journey home on the bike. It has become my go to extra layer when a full on jacket is not required. It does not shout biker and possibly a better piece for everyday use than the Down X, outstanding.
AussieDunk: Great little warmer
Fits true to size, this excellent mid layer is light and snug, providing an extra layer of warmth when required without the bulk. Can also be used as a lightweight top in the spring.
