Motorcycle Base Layers

Wearing the correct base layers is one of the most important things to do when you are motorcycling. Too often customers spend a lot of money on a decent suit and then ruin it by wearing a cotton T-shirt! Base layers need to be a proper breathable material so they help you regulate your body temperature.  It is about keeping warm in winter, keeping cool in summer, allowing your body sweat to evaporate effectively and allowing your expensive suit to do its job properly. Even in winter sweat needs to escape to keep the body dry. And this is crucial because if you are wet on the inside, and the temperature drops further our bodies will lose heat 20 times faster through a wet environment than a dry one. The base layer is a building block in winter on top of which you need a technical mid layer.

Icebreaker mens merino 260 Tech long sleeve half zip base layer in black

Martin Kernahan: Does what it says on the tin

Does what it says on the tin. Actually thats probably not true as I suspect this garment would be useless as an actual icebreaker. However as a base layer to keep me warm it does exactly that. I did wonder why it costs theee times as much as a merino base layer from my local high street outdoor outfitters but it turns out that you do need to inconvenience some actual merino sheep. Excellent.

Klim Zephyr Wind shirt in black

Jamie: Forget Jumpers And Sweatshirts

This is all youll ever need! Im always a bit cynical when a product gets hyped up as much as this, but I do trust Motolegends to say it as it is and Im always willing to take a gamble and find out for myself. Ive lost a LOT of money over the years doing this but Ive had a few results and this is definitely one of them. The first thing I noticed was how flimsy it feels, but it isnt at all and actually feels like it will be very robust. I wore this over a long sleeved t shirt under my normal jacket when it was 8 degrees and it done exactly what Id been told it would - took the chill off completely. Wore it yesterday 3 degrees at motorway speeds and a tour of West London and although Id added a thermal base layer under the T shirt the Klim Zephyr under my Goldtop jacket was the perfect combination- warm enough without feeling sweaty and over heating at any point. Im a large in pretty much every other topjacket but the Medium fitted me like a glove. The fact that it also packs down small enough to fit in a googles pouch means it will be going everywhere with me from now on.

Icebreaker mens merino 560 Realfleece Elemental II long sleeve zip jacket

Sam_S: Much too nice for just the bike!

Far too nice a garment to keep for riding. I wear mine as a smart casual cardigan. Perfect for chilly mornings and evenings.
