Helmet Intercoms

Motorcycle intercoms are great bits of kit for allowing you to stay connected to other riders and to your phone or GPS whilst on the bike. There is a plethora of options, and you can either get an intercom that is integrated into your motorcycle helmet or one that bolts onto the side. Intercoms can start from as little as £100 and range all the way up to £360 for a top of the range unit. Nearly every helmet manufacturer has a tie-up with a manufacturer of an intercom system: Shoei, Schuberth, Shark and Nolan all work with integrated Sena systems. But, if your helmet doesn’t have the option of an integrated system you can put a Sena or Interphone comms. unit onto the helmet externally.

FAQs
How to choose a motorcycle intercom?
There are a few things that need to be considered when selecting which motorcycle intercom you want for your helmet. Normally, we would recommend getting an integrated system if there is one available, as this will create less wind noise and be much less of an eye sore! However, for some people these are a bit overkill. Many riders just want to be able to connect to their phone and listen to their GPS instructions. If this is the case, we would recommend a cheaper alternative that would be attached to the outside of the helmet, such as the Interphone UCOM 3.

Interphone UCOM 16 intercom

Alex: A definite improvement on other manufacturers

Ive used Sena for the last couple of bluetooths units Ive bought, as they're often thought of as the top tier manufacturer but in reality are often buggy and not entirely waterproof. This time, I got a Interphone UCOM-16 on recommendation despite me not having heard of them before. After a month of ownership, I wish to make my own hearty recommendation for them. The UCOM-16 model is fully compatible with all Senas without fault, but is also loaded with the latest Mesh 2.0 system which really is the bees knees. Audio quality and loudness much better than my previous Senas. Battery life much longer. I rode in a group of four, with the other three on various sena models and we had no issues but I had the best audio out of the group both TXRX. Plus its IP67 so in the heavy Welsh rain I had no issues at all. I have had the unit connected direct to my iPhone, as well as via my bikes TFT BMW. Both operated flawlessly. I would emphatically recommend anyone still clinging on to Sena or other manufacturers to move on to the UCOM 16, and if like me you were worried about riding in a group who all use Senas, really don't worry!

Adam Augustin: Mr

I now have 3 of these that link to my 20s evo, which I use for motorcycle instruction. Frankly after trying most other blue tooth and back to back radio systems these are by far the best. Easy to link, simple to install to the students lids, and a large volume control which they can find even with gloves on. With really no other buttons to press its fool proof. Range is good for the claimed 700m even in built up areas and significantly better than the claims of others. For instructors these are perfect. Downside is when you remove the boom mic the supplied rubber hung is easy for the students to loose. Changed them for simple flat grommets. I would highly recommend them
