Laminated membrane
Laminated membrane motorcycle jackets are the best option for high mileage daily commuters or big distance tourers. A laminated jacket is where the membrane is basically heat sealed to the inside of the outer fabric of the jacket. This makes the jacket inpenetrable to water. It will never wet out; it will dry quickly and where there are vents they will allow air direct to the body for most effective venting. The very top of the tree for a laminated jacket in the motorcycling arena is a 3 layer Goretex Pro membrane which we stock from companies such as Klim, Rukka, Stadler, Belstaff and more recently even Richa.
Interestingly, new for 2024, Rukka is now working with a non Goretex waterproof membrane to offer a more value driven laminate product. We will be interested to see how the Rukka Kemi performs.

Rukka Voyage-R jacket in black
I bought this jacket from Motolegends November 24. We all know of the legendary Rukka build quality, so Ill not comment on that. My story started with the intention of buying the best impact and abrasion protection I could afford for motorway riding. These journeys are routinely 250 plus miles and around 4 hours at a time. I wanted the Kingsley but could not afford the kings ransom for the monarch of the Rukka range. Eventually I opted for the Voyage-R, and it was discounted. I know the guys at Motolegends are in love with the Nivala range, but the often-hailed comfort factor was not an incentive for me as I dont ride out and wander round coastal villages or places like Bluewater. With this in mind I really dont worry about the Nivala comfort factor. I actually like the stiffer armoured feel that the Voyage-R offers. I dont have a need for lots of ventilation, as I dont intend to use this for summer riding. I use my other gear and bikes for that. So, in effect this jacket is perfect for me almost too good to use on our crappy roads. Im now saving for the Kingsley pants. I tried a pair, and I really love the fit, perfect, so standby Motolegends.
Klim Latitude jacket in stealth black
I bought this to replace a 5 year old Halvarssons jacket which was no longer as waterproof as I would like given I ride year round and regularly travel from Gloucestershire to Northumberland on my bike. So far it has proven to be totally waterproof, comfortable to wear and quite windproof. With suitable layers beneath Ive done 350 miles in gale driven rain and remained dry and warm. My only issue is that although there are zips at the end of the sleeves I still cant get winter gloves inside the sleeve and the ends of the sleeves are quite hard and have a tendency to dig in to my wrist unless I make sure a mid layer is protecting my skin. Otherwise its excellent.
Rukka Kemi jacket in black
I watched multiple reviews of this jacket. The Motolegends review is excellent. Realistically I dont need a laminate jacket, but I prefer the way they feel to a drop liner jacket. As far as the Gore-tex argument goes. I am sure they stand by the lifetime guarantee but its a big price hike for something that realistically I am unlikely to ever take advantage of. The Kemi comes with a level 1 back protector so I bought a level 2 one. I switched the level 1 armour to an Alpinestars jacket that came with no protection. I also bought the Rukka down jacket. Both of these are highlighted by Chris as things the Nivala benefits from. For me the Kemi is excellent value for money. Its windproof, waterproof, well armoured and comfortable.
