Bering Austral GTX jacket in grey / blue Product Information
The Austral has been designed very much in the mould of an adventure jacket. Perhaps its most distinguishing feature is that it comes with an asymmetric zip; a zip that allows the jacket to be furnished with a large, external pocket on the chest.
A key point to make about the Austral is that it comes equipped with a two-layer, laminated membrane. Clearly this means that the jacket will never wet out. But the key factor is that the membrane is by Gore-Tex. Now Bering gives all its Gore-Tex products a five-year warranty against manufacturing faults. And this includes waterproofing, of course. But, more importantly, you benefit from Gore's lifetime 'guaranteed to keep you dry' warranty.
In terms of protection, the jacket is rated A under EN17092. It comes fitted with Level 1 armour in the shoulders and elbows. There's a pocket for a back protector. Now, here at Motolegends, we are not usually swayed by a garment's EN 17092 rating. It is, after all, little more than an abrasion test. But where a garment is only A rated, we would always be tempted to swap the armour for Level 2. The easiest, and best, solution would be to swap the armour out for something from D3O.
The upside, perhaps, of the jacket's A rating is a high degree of comfort; and the jacket is indeed extremely easy to wear, whether on, or off, the bike.
There's a down-style, inner jacket for warmth. It's not a real, down jacket; it contains a hollow-form fibre of some description to trap the heat generated by the body. It will do a job. The jacket is configured as a 'destination' jacket, meaning that it works as a standalone garment.
In terms of features, the Austral has lots of bells and whistles. A removable hood. Large vents on the chest, but no exhaust vents. Four external pockets. A ticket pocket on the forearm. Two internal pockets. Useful gusset zips to allow the jacket to splay on the bike. Zips and velcro flaps at the ends of the sleeves. Gusset zips that allow the jacket to splay on the bike. A really useful waist adjustment system. Reflective detailing and, of course, a zip to attach the jacket to the pant.
Now, the Austral is not just a jacket. It's a suit, as well. But we have to say that we have a problem with Bering's pants. Not just the Austral pants. All Bering pants. They come in one length only. And that simply isn't enough at this end of the market.
