Spidi Roar leather jacket in burgundy Product Information
First thing to talk about on the Spidi Roar jacket is the leather.
Spidi has always been renowned for its leather; more so than Alpinestars and even Dainese. Based in the Chiampo Valley that is famous worldwide for its tanneries, Spidi is always able to find exactly the right leather for every kind of motorcycle application.
The printed hides used on the Roar jacket are lighter and thinner than you would find on many leather jackets. It's around 1.0/1.1 mm in thickness. This in part explains why the Roar is so comfortable, but yet the leather still passes the EN 17092 abrasion-resistance tests at the AA level.
The armour in the elbows and shoulders, by the way, is Level 2. Now Spidi makes its own armour, as they always have done. All we can say is that it is as comfortable as any Level 2 armour we have come across, especially given that it's so large. This is armour you would never have to think about upgrading. You really do barely notice that the jacket has protectors at all. The jacket doesn't come with a back protector, and in contrast to what I have said about Spidi's limb protectors, for the back we would suggest a D3O protector with Velcro (we offer both level 1 and level 2 versions).
The jacket has a mesh lining, and for a lightweight jacket like this that's probably the best solution. You get three, external, zipped pockets; and one inside. There's a mechanism for adjusting the fit at the natural waist. The ends of the sleeves feature zips and a single popper; enough to enable you to fit the cuff of a summer glove inside the sleeve. But not much more. Under the arms and into the shoulders the leather is perforated for improved airflow.
What the jacket doesn't have is a lowered back; and that disappoints us a little. A lowered back doesn't ruin the way a jacket wears, but it can allow it to work better on the bike.
The Roar is equipped to take Spidi's zip-in thermal layers and their waterproof ones too. But these days nobody wants that kind of hassle. If it's a bit chillier, wear a Merino top. And if it rains put a Scott on over the jacket. And on a leather jacket that is where you want your waterproof; on the outside; not on the inside.
The Roar is such a nice jacket to wear. There are some people who like those thick and heavy, heritage-style, jackets produced by the likes of Lewis Leathers and Gold Top. But in our view those are form over function. If you want to look as though you've stepped out of a black and white rockers' movie, then fine. But if you want a jacket that you can wear all day; wear on the bike, wear around town and wear into the café, then it's something like the Roar that you really want.
It's got all the protective attributes you might look for. It's as stylish as a motorcycle jacket gets. But to put a Roar on is to fall for its charms. It's lovely.
Finally, we really like the colour. It makes a change from black or brown. What exactly the colour is is harder to define. It's not quite a bordeaux or a maroon. It's not mauve. I think we're going to go with burgundy. That sounds about right to us.
At £479.99 the Roar is not a cheap jacket, but if cheap is what you want, then you'll never be short of options out there.
