Spidi Garage leather jacket in brown Product Information

The Spidi Garage is indeed a lovely leather jacket. Weighing in at under 2kg., it's very lightweight. It's easy to wear. The waxy leather gives it a great patina. It fits in a somewhat more relaxed fashion than the slightly svelter Spidi Vintage jacket. Although there's a button adjuster strap at the waist if you want to cinch the jacket in a bit.

The starting point is the 1.0/1.2 mm leather. It's dark brown in colour, made even darker due its hand waxing. This treatment, which is done by Spidi's own people in the factory in Italy, serves to soften the leather. But the wax also makes the leather quite hydrophobic.

Now, somewhat risibly, Spidi states that this jacket is 50% waterproof. No idea what that means. Presumably, if it rains, only one half of you will get wet! From our perspective, we would never suggest that any leather jacket is waterproof, although the wax impregnation may initially stop the wet stuff from being absorbed by the leather. I suppose that this might mean that one could think of the Garage as water resistant in a shower. But that's a best case scenario.

You get two, zipped, slash pockets on the front of the jacket, and an 'open' wallet pocket inside the jacket. On the chest it looks as though you get two more pockets; but they're actually zipped vents. One thing we do like is that all the zips, including the main zip, are heavy-duty, chunky, slightly industrial, YKK steel zips. They look right. And they feel right. You get the same zips at the ends of the sleeves, along with Velcro flaps.

The jacket is rated AA for abrasion resistance under EN17092. That's what you might expect, and look for. The armour in the elbows and shoulders is Level 2, which is impressive. The back protector doesn't come as standard. It fixes in place with Velcro behind a flap, and 11 days out of 10 we would go with a T7 back protector from D3O. You could go Level 1 or 2, but on a jacket this light and easy to wear we might be tempted to go Level 1, although Level 2, obviously, is more protective.

The jacket's lining is cotton, and very simple. And that's what we prefer in a leather jacket. If you want to be warm in the jacket, simply wear something more insulating inside it.

There is, by the way, what Spidi calls a 'Robust' version of the Garage. The same jacket, but with more space for a tummy. The difference here is that as the waist gets bigger, the arms don't get longer. And that's important because simply going for a larger size can, for some people, mean that the sleeves drag on the floor! The ''Robusto' version, though, only comes in black.
