In typical French fashion, the Lady Tabata from Segura has been put together more as a style statement than a technical one. Yet, once this is understood, it is hard to find fault with it. Okay, there's all the nonsense hyperbole on Segura's website about this being the jacket for lady bikers who are passionate about travel, freedom and exploration, but the bottom line is that it's a pretty cool-looking jacket that will work for a lot of people. But don't get carried away; this is no Rukka or Klim. This is not the jacket you want for world travel. But for a weekend sojourn it will be fine.
The outer fabric, which combines cotton with polyester, is known as Serica. It has a soft handle, yet is strong enough to earn the jacket an AA rating for abrasion resistance under EN 17092. The jacket comes equipped with Level 1 CE armour in the elbows and shoulders. You could upgrade to Level 2, but comfort would suffer. The jacket has a pocket that will take a D3O LP1 back protector.
Taking its design cues from military jackets like the M65, the jacket has four external pockets. You get another two on the inside. On the biceps are zips for ventilation. There's an exhaust vent at the back of the jacket. You also get zips and poppers at the sleeve ends. There's a poppered placket that runs down the front of the main zip. And on the hips you get concertina banding to enable the jacket's hem to splay a little on the bike. We like this; it's quite clever. To cinch the jacket at the waist, there's an internal drawstring.
The jacket has a waterproof membrane. This will help you stay dry, but this is not the jacket you want in a heavy or prolonged downpour. Then again, that's not what the Lady Tabata is designed for. What the membrane will always do, however, is help you stay warm.
The jacket also has a removable thermal liner. Again, it will do a job. It won't keep you warm enough for a winter commute but, then again, this is not that jacket.
The Lady Tabata is what it is. It is a stylish jacket that will be easy to why. Within limits, it will keep you dry and it will keep you warm. Segura gear very rarely goes wrong, so you can expect the Lady Tabata to render long and reliable service. And so, for what you get we reckon the price is more than reasonable.
