Segura Fergus jacket in brown Product Information
The Segura Fergus is a motorcycle jacket. That, I suppose, is pretty obvious; but it’s pretty much what you’d expect from Segura or its sister brand Bering. The Fergus ticks all the right boxes. It’s got all the bits you would expect to find in a motorcycle jacket. This having been said, there is nothing extraordinary about the Fergus.
The external fabric is a material called Serica. It feels soft and pliable in the way that the outer chassis of many jackets at this kind of price point do not; some of which are shiny and a bit plastic feeling.
The Fergus is equipped with a fixed, drop-liner membrane, and a removable, thermal, inner jacket. The jacket comes with Level 1 armour in the elbows and shoulders. It is equipped with a pocket for a back protector. The jacket is rated AA under EN17092.
There’s a popper adjuster at the waist. The sleeves have zips at the ends to allow gloves to be worn inside the cuff. On the outside of the jacket there are five pockets; there are more on the inside. There are vents above the pockets. On the chest there are two pockets that can also be be held open with poppers so that they too can act as vents.
Behind the shoulders are what are known as ‘football pockets’; basically gussets that allow the jacket to remain comfortable when you lean forward on the bars. There are additional layers of material on the shoulders. In principle, these will make the outer fabric stronger in those areas, but we suspect that they are there more for stylistic reasons than functional ones.
The jacket differs from other Segura and Bering jackets mostly in terms of styling. And we are not quite sure what the styling cues on the Fergus are about, but we are guessing that it has a bit of a military look to it, what with the Molle-style straps above the left breast pocket.
In some ways the Fergus is nothing extraordinary. It is not massively technical. It is not equipped with a high-falutin’, laminated membrane, the venting is no more than average, the thermal liner is tokenistic; enough to take the chill off, but not enough for a winter commute.
Nevertheless there is much to commend with the Fergus. It feels really solidly put together. What you can buy for this kind of money elsewhere is not really comparable. The other thing you need to know about Segura’s jackets is that they simply do what they were intended to do. They are reliable. They are waterproof. They will keep you warm. They will provide reasonable protection if it all goes wrong.
You can spend more. You can buy jackets that do much more, and that are more appropriate for what one might term more extreme conditions. But at less than £300 at the time of writing, you won’t find better value for money. If you want a jacket that does what it says on the tin, and that looks pretty cool too, then the Fergus may be for you.
