Spidi Pentagon H2Out jacket in anthracite Product Information

The idea here is pretty simple. Jackets like this are not traditional biker jackets. They channel a more stylish aesthetic. The Spidi jacket we are talking about here, for example, is properly certified as an item of protective motorcycle wear, but the idea is that it goes over your suit, or whatever it is you wear to work. When you park your bike up, you get off, and you walk into the office wearing the same jacket you wore for the ride in. It's like a traditional overcoat, but one that's perfectly up to the rigours of a daily commute.

The jacket is incredibly lightweight. It doesn't, in any way, feel like a motorcycle jacket. And, of course, as you can see, it doesn't look like one either. It's smart enough to wear through the front lobby of even the most prestigious office.

You get six outer pockets, and three more on the inside. It's got a high collar, adjusters to cinch the jacket in at the waist, a storm flap up the front, a chunky, YKK zip, and poppers at the ends of the sleeves. The jacket comes with a reasonably substantial, zip-out, thermal liner.

There's armour in the elbows and sleeves, but even though the armour is, in terms of its coverage area, quite large, it's not thick; and you can barely notice it when you're wearing the jacket. Impressively, it's Level 2. There's a pocket for a back protector. We would recommend a Level 1 or 2, D3O protector equipped with Velcro. The jacket is rated is rated A for abrasion resistance under EN 17092; and that's what you would expect of a piece intended more for urban riding than the motorway.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Pentagon jacket, especially given how darned comfortable it is, is that it is equipped with a laminated three-layer waterproof membrane. Laminated garments are rarely this comfortable. It also has to be said that we normally have reservations about about laminated membranes that are not supplied by Gore. But Spidi motorcycle gear has never let us down, and we've been dealing with them for over 10 years; so we are prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. Their gear normally does what it's supposed to.

We think this is as good as one of these commuter-style jackets gets. It's stylish, light, easy to wear, sufficiently protective for the job in hand, and it's going to be impressively waterproof.
