Hiplok D1000 D lock Product Information

We get very nervous when it comes to motorcycle security. And we take a lot of convincing if somebody wants us to go out and promote one of their locks, chains or posts. Which is why you won't find many security devices on our website. But we have decided to add the Hiplok D1000 to our offering.

What we'll never do is paste up on the website a company's entire range of devices. Frankly, from anybody's range, we'll only want to offer their strongest, most secure product or products. We don't buy in to the notion of spending a little less money for something that's just a little more likely to get your bike stolen. We are only interested in the best, so that we give customers the very best opportunity to prevent their bike going missing.

Which is why, right now, the only disc lock we offer is the Squire Defiant.

But security devices are just a little bit beyond our natural, comfort zone. We know clothing, but we are not security specialists. So you need to satisfy yourself that a Hiplok is what you need.

Bennett's Social came out a few years ago and stated that the Hiplok D-ring we're talking about here was the 'most effective mobile security device they had ever seen.' Well, that's not really a statement that tells us anything useful, and so all we have to go on is that, under the 'Sold Secure' testing protocol, the two Hiplok motorcycle D-locks we have here are the only two that are Diamond rated. There are many that are Diamond rated for bicycles, but right now we are led to believe that this is the only one so accredited for motorcycles. So for now, if it's a D-lock you're after these two seem to be about as good as it gets.

But what you need to understand is that no device is ever going to make it impossible for somebody to steal your bike. A handful of tired, old men broke into the safety deposit vaults in Hatton Garden, so if somebody really wants your bike they will find a way.

And so all that a device like this can do is let people know that there are probably easier pickings around the corner. If you park your GS next to two others, and yours has a Hiplok on, then there's a chance that the other two will suddenly look more attractive.

Hiplok produces two D-locks. In essence we are talking about one product here, but it comes in two sizes.

The larger DX1000 features internal locking dimensions of eight inches by almost four and a half inches. The smaller D1000 is six inches by three and a half inches. That dimension is the measurement inside the U-ring (see diagram in size chart).

Both are heavy. That's reassuring, but weight on the bike is rarely your friend. The larger lock weighs five and three quarter pounds; the smaller one is four pounds.

We really like the locks' rubber coating. It's going to reduce the chances of damaging paintwork, chrome and so on.

What Hiplok tells us about the locks is as follows.

Apparently, both devices resist grinder attacks. But again I don't know what that means. Presumably it doesn't mean that an angle grinder will never be able to cut through it. 'Resist' is not a particularly reassuring word.  There are lots of motorcycle jackets out there that offer a degree of 'resistance' to the rain. But we all know that eventually the rain will prevail.

Hiplok also talk about anti-rotation, double-locking tabs. Don't quite know what that means. And Hiplok don't tell us either.

Apparently, it's a composite material known as Graphene that gives the Hiplock locks their toughness, but ultimately we have to fall back on Sold Secure's top Diamond rating, in the belief that these guys know what they're on about.

The locks also gain a four-star rating under the ART scheme. Now you can get locks rated as five stars under this scheme, but such locks are deemed to be for fixed use in garages, and so are too heavy to carry.

The Hiplok D-rings come with three, coded keys, and they are replaceable.

In the modern world bikes are very nickable. Other than taking it upstairs and locking it in your bedroom, you can never do anything to guarantee that your bike won't be stolen.

Our view is that a few quid spent on some locks to put off the opportunist thief is probably money well spent. And we take the view that getting the best lock you can makes sense.

Undoubtedly, you can get disc locks that are less expensive than these two, but if £250/£300 is going to save you from being parted from your loved one for a long while, you might consider it money well spent. Just think of the insurance company excess!

Along with the Squire Defiant disc lock, we believe that this and the Hiplok DX1000 are about as good as it gets.

Nothing is guaranteed, but we don't think you'll find better.
